Growing Minds at Lakeside
The Growing Minds programme started at Lakeside in November 2015 with small “Relax Kids” groups two afternoons a week and has grown to a 2 day provision across the whole school. Small groups, one to ones, whole classes and a weekly assembly for KS1 and KS2 ensures that every member of our school can benefit.
“Relax Kids” (RK) sessions incorporate movement and exercise, mindfulness and relaxation games, stretching, peer or self-massage, breathing techniques, affirmations and relaxation. Evidence shows that this can help children decrease stress and anxiety, increase attention span and improve concentration and creativity. Relax Kids also supports pupil self-esteem and resilience and can help them approach new or tricky situations with increased confidence.
Growing Minds consists of a bespoke programme which incorporates the RK steps but also uses cognitive behavioural techniques and research in the field of neuroscience. The aim is to help children learn how the brain works and increase their emotional vocabulary in order to strengthen mental health and wellbeing. It provides the building blocks for understanding and developing a growth mindset.
“Growing Minds” brings together the initiatives in mindfulness, mental health, growth mindset, resilience, Relax Kids and CBT. Growing Minds is for all children at Lakeside and is also an effective early intervention tool. It meets Ofsted’s increased focus on ‘self-confidence, self-awareness and understanding of how to be a successful learner through ongoing personal development….taking away a knowledge of how to keep themselves emotionally healthy with a variety of ‘tools’ at their disposal.’
