EYFS

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) applies to children from birth to the end of the Reception year. The EYFS is based upon four principles:

  • A Unique Child
  • Positive Relationships
  • Enabling Environments
  • Learning and Development

Reception at Lakeside Primary School
The Foundation Stage comprises of three Reception classes.

Our staff work as part of a team, children from our Reception Classes have the opportunities to work together in the outdoor environment on a daily basis. EYFS staff plan together to ensure continuity and progression, providing age and stage related activities to suit all our children. Children are taught within their own class groups, they are taught in a variety of ways; in whole class groups, small group work, pairs and individually. We are dedicated to providing excellent pastoral care and education to those children in our school. Staff are fully qualified, have a wide range of experience and expertise in working with and educating children. The Staff are committed to professional development and attend up to date training courses and have excellent knowledge of the Early Years Foundation Stage and child development.

‘Outstanding provision in the Reception classes and supportive relationships with parents enable children to make excellent progress and an excellent start to school life...They learn rapidly and develop excellent attitudes to learning, through play activities in a safe and creative environment’. Ofsted 2013

Forest Schools

At Lakeside Primary, we are very lucky to have a Forest School within our school grounds. Our Forest
Schools area is in the top corner of the school playing fields. We have a base camp and various areas including grass, digging, over-grown and a mud kitchen. Our fully trained Forest Schools teacher is Mrs Leishman. The Reception children are timetabled to our Forest School on a weekly basis. They visit in small groups and have a wonderful time learning about the natural environment and how to handle risks. The children develop their teamwork skills through games and activities and express their creativity through environmental art. At the end of the session the children enjoy a warming chocolate drink and a yummy biscuit!

Forest Schools makes a difference to our children because it

  • increases self-esteem and self confidence
  • supports the children in learning to work together
  • encourages an improved understanding of the outdoors and how to look after it
  • increases the children’s skills and knowledge in every area of the curriculum

The experience of Forest Schools is very valuable to our children. We are so fortunate at Lakeside to have this fantastic facility on our school site. The benefits to all children are striking, particularly in developing their confidence and independence.
